Chapter Thirteen

Callie

What was it about a serious sob session that completely wiped a person out?

I trudged up the concrete and iron staircase to my apartment, the muscles in my legs sapped from the emotional wringer of the last six or so hours and the late July heat. The twelve-pack of La Croixs in one hand and the three plastic grocery bags filled to the brim dangling from the other sure didn’t help matters. But more than that, my eyes burned with the need to let my eyelids close and my body drift until I found the sweet release of sleep. In the morning, I’d feel about seventy-five times better. Lighter. I’d learned that much from the other near misses with drinking and the crying jags that had followed over the last year.

But I couldn’t go to sleep just yet.

Not until I got to enjoy just a little time with Danny watching TV. Not even a head-to-head with booze was going to rob me of that simple pleasure, even if the interaction re-fired all the crazy emotions I’d finally managed to even out over the afternoon at Susan’s house.

Inside my apartment, the air was uncomfortably stuffy—the byproduct of trying to save a few bucks in the thick of a Texas summer in a run-down apartment with air conditioners older than I was. I unloaded the groceries on the kitchen counter, stashed my purse and phone in their usual spots and adjusted the thermostat before getting busy with unpacking my loot. By the time I finished, the digital readout on the microwave showed 8:25. Just barely enough time to run a brush through my crazy as fuck hair and see if I couldn’t do something to make my eyes look like they hadn’t just watched Steel Magnolias three times in a row.

Halfway to the bathroom, three solid knocks sounded on the front door.

Well, shit.

Looked like Danny was going to get his first dose of seeing me and my best drowned rat routine.

I combed my fingers through my hair on the way to the door and pulled in a few slow breaths before I turned the knob and opened it.

Man.

Bedraggled and weary or not, seeing Danny and all his handsome goodness outside of my apartment was a serious jump start. And not in a bow-chicka-wow-wow way either—though I imagined if those full lips of his got involved that would change.

No, this was more of a cozy, easy feeling. Like when you walk out into the first sunny spring day after months of cold and cloudy. I smiled at the thought, but my cheeks quivered in the process. “You, sir, are a sight for sore eyes.”

The rakish grin that had been on his face when I’d opened the door had slowly disappeared, but shifted to open concern at my greeting. “What happened?”

Damn. I must’ve passed drowned rat and transitioned to death warmed over sometime on the drive home.

I stepped out of Danny’s way and waved him in. “Kind of a long story. You might wanna come in and grab a cookie.
